Bay Mills Resort & Casino evacuated its gaming floor Tuesday afternoon after part of the roof collapsed over Sacy’s Restaurant. The casino in Brimley, MI, reopened the main floor within hours. No injuries were reported.
Emergency services responded to the incident at approximately 2:30 p.m. on January 6, according to the Bay Mills Indian Community, which provides law enforcement on the reservation. The roof collapse occurred at Sacy’s Restaurant around 2:40 p.m.
Casino officials closed the restaurant and evacuated the gaming floor as a precautionary measure. The gaming floor reopened at 5 p.m., approximately two-and-a-half hours after the incident.
Broken Roof Trusses Under Investigation
Preliminary observations indicate the collapse may be related to broken roof trusses. The cause remains under investigation. Casino officials stated that the collapse cannot be assumed to be due to snow load, as maintenance staff had been actively conducting ongoing snow shoveling and preventative care.
Sacy’s Restaurant and the adjoining hallway remain closed pending continued assessment and safety evaluations. The casino is asking guests traveling to and from the hotel and main casino floor to use a designated walkway for access.
The Comedy Club event scheduled for Friday, January 9, has been canceled.
Jackpots Hit After Reopening
Four players hit jackpots after the gaming floor reopened, according to a casino Facebook post. One jackpot totaled more than $15,000.
Bay Mills Resort & Casino thanked employees for their rapid response and quick evacuation. No additional structural damage has been identified outside the immediate areas of concern.
The roof collapse is not related to Bay Mills Resort & Casino’s ongoing expansion project. The resort has been undergoing a $65 million expansion since 2023, which includes adding 134 additional rooms with balconies, a deli, spa with massage therapy rooms, pool with splash pad, hot tubs, nail salon, fitness center, arcade, conference space, and storefront.
The expansion grand opening is scheduled for January 30. The waterfront resort is located in Brimley, approximately 45 minutes north of the Mackinac Bridge, and currently has 142 hotel rooms and multiple dining options.
