New York State Bar Association to host webinar on sports betting and prediction markets

The free online session will examine the differences between mobile sports betting and prediction markets while raising awareness about problem gambling and available support resources.

US.- The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) will host a free webinar on Aug. 17 exploring the rise of mobile sports betting and prediction markets, as well as the risks associated with problem gambling. Titled “The New Gambling Landscape: Mobile Sports Betting and Prediction Markets,” the one-hour online session will run from 12pm to 1pm. and is open to the public. The webinar is sponsored by the association’s Lawyer Assistance Committee and Sports Committee.

The session will be led by Katie Mibaum, team leader at the New York Council on Problem Gambling, who will explain how mobile sports betting and prediction markets operate and examine the growing impact of both products as they become more widely accessible. Participants will also learn how to distinguish between the two forms of wagering and explore why their increasing popularity has raised new responsible gambling concerns.

The webinar will also address problem gambling, covering common warning signs, risk factors and the potential effects gambling disorders can have on individuals, families and professional lives. In addition, attendees will receive information about treatment options, support services and other resources available to people experiencing gambling-related harm or seeking to help others.

The programme comes as online sports betting continues to expand in New York. Since the state legalised mobile betting in 2022, nearly $58bn has been wagered through online sportsbooks, according to the New York State Gaming Commission.
