Data for the last quarter show that gross gaming yield and the number of online slot spins reached new peaks.
UK.- The British Gambling Commission has published its latest data on the gaming industry in Great Britain. Data sourced from operators for quarter ending June 30 2025 shows a rise in gross gambling yield (GGY) despite the introduction of new stake limits for online slots.
Online GGY for Q1 of the fiscal year (April to June) was £1.49bn. That’s an increase of 2 per cent from Q1 of 2024. The overall number of total bets and spins increased 6 per cent year-on-year to 26.1bn, but the number of average monthly active accounts in the quarter decreased by 10 per cent, to 12.7m.
Real event betting GGY decreased by 9 per cent to £570m, and the number of bets decreased 7 per cent, while average monthly active accounts decreased 16 per cent. Slots GGY increased by 14 per cent to £745m. The number of spins increased 8 per cent to 24.4bn while average monthly active accounts remained stable at 4.4m per month.
The GGY and number of spins represented new peaks for this dataset. The number of online slots sessions lasting longer than an hour decreased by 9 per cent to 8.8m, and the average session length decreased by 1 minute to 16 minutes.
Approximately 5 per cent of all sessions lasted more than one hour, a decrease from 6 per cent from Q1 last year. A couple of operators refined their session length methodology during the quarter which impacted the number of sessions, sessions over one hour and average session length metrics.
The figures suggest that any impact of the new stake limits for online slots may have been fairly limited, potentially slowing growth rather than leading to a decline GGY. The £5 limit for all adults went live on April 9 while a £2 limit for adults aged 18 to 24 came into force on May 21.
As for retail betting premises, GGY decreased by 5 per cent to £552m. The number of bets and spins decreased by 3 per cent to 3.2bn. As ever, the Gambling Commission said a comparison should not be made with the industry statistics dataset, as this dataset may include free bets and bonuses and does not include data from all operators.
