Kalshi founder hails ‘indices future’ with S&P Dow Jones

Kalshi is ready to power the next generation of financial markets through new indices co-developed with S&P Dow Jones.

The statement of intent was declared by CEO and co-founder Tarek Mansour, who proclaims Kalshi will usher in a new era of trading for investors on real life events via S&P Dow Jones indices composed of its event contracts.

Mansour drew parallels with the history of the Dow Jones and S&P 500, and the creation of financial products and collective indices that disrupted traditional markets with new trading options for investors.

“The Dow launched in 1896. The S&P 500 in 1957. The idea was simple: bring individual stocks together into a single benchmark, giving people a clearer view of the broader market.”

“Index funds, ETFs, futures, and options gave investors ways to gain diversified market exposure and hedge broad market swings.”

A whole new world!

The partnership will seek to combine related Kalshi event contracts into single collective indicators, potentially covering political power, supply chain risks, AI’s impact on employment, sports outcomes and weather.

“Through this partnership, S&P Dow Jones Indices and Kalshi will work together to create indices composed of Kalshi event contracts,” Mansour stated. “Think about what that opens up.”

Over time, products built around these indices could offer investors diversified exposure to events and new ways to hedge risks. The announcement does not specify a launch date or confirm particular investment products.

Mansour founded Kalshi with the aim of turning daily risks and world events into tradeable assets. The founder has long maintained that Kalshi’s platform should not be regarded in the same category as sports betting or gambling.

S&P Dow Jones indices tracking event contracts are viewed as the next evolution of Kalshi. Mansour proclaimed: “Our partnership also enables us to list contracts on the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and other S&P DJI indices, with settlement tied directly to official index data.”

“The next phase of financial markets covers the full range of risks people and institutions actually face… That’s what we’re building.”

Status still in check

Kalshi’s ambitions have been legally challenged in the US, as multiple states argue that its event contracts should be subject to state gambling laws.

These challenges include New York pursuing restitution, forfeiture of gains and financial penalties of a reported $36bn from Kalshi for allegedly offering prediction markets in breach of state gambling laws.

Elsewhere, New Jersey has called on the US Supreme Court to review a federal appeals court ruling that favoured Kalshi, arguing that CFTC regulation does not exempt its sports event contracts from state gambling laws. New Jersey appeal is detailed to have called on submissions of the NFL, tribal organisation and the American Gaming Association (AGA).

Mansour remains confident in Kalshi’s legal status, in which he believes that the Supreme Court will stand by the CFTC favourability of prediction markets over the challenges of US states.

The Supreme Court has yet to decide whether to hear New Jersey’s challenge, leaving open whether the justices will settle the dispute over regulatory authority. Kalshi’s response to the petition is due on 9 November.

An overseas path?

Beyond the US, Kalshi growth has been interrupted in Europe and South America, as individual gambling authorities have blocked the launch of prediction market platforms, deemed to have no distinction with sports betting and gambling.

Last month, Kalshi and rival Polymarket reportedly began lobbying financial regulators including the LSE and EuroNext,  to recognise prediction markets as a new utility for financial services.

The S&P Dow Jones development of event contract indices could offer route overseas, with Kalshi proving its point of distinction. The  selling data and licensing indices could help Kalshi reach international institutions, however in Europe the legitimacy of trading services would still require approval by individual authorities.

As key determinations beckon, Kalshi’s reported $40bn valuation makes it hard to ignore as the most disruptive enterprise in gambling and trading, regardless of legal status.
